| The
Pine Mountain Roots and Shoots group is sponsored by the
Jizo Peace Center. It is one of thousands of world-wide
chapters of Jane Goodall's Roots and Shoots program for
children, see www.rootsandshoots.org.
Through suggested activities, children feel closer to
the earth and learn to appreciate the peaceful wonders
that nature reveals every day.
Beginning
in February, 2007, Pine Mountain Roots and Shoots focused
on the Reusable Bag Campaign as outlined on the R &
S website. In several meetings, the children made bags
for their families to use in grocery shopping over and
over again.
In May, 2007, the group participated in two booths at
the NatureFest and the Lilac Festivals, selling bags along
with a raffle for bags filled with donated supplies from
local merchants. A young member picked the raffle winners
out of a basket. Enough money was raised for over a year
of activities!
Additional projects included creating stone necklaces,
making edible clay (recipe listed under Family Guidance),
having a tour of the Pine Mountain herbal garden, learning
how to groom and prepare a horse for riding, participating
in the annual Chalk Festival in Frazier Park, (the pavement
tree made by the group won a prize), and listening to
a talk by the Director of the Mil Potrero Water Company
in Pine Mountain Club.
In
April, 2008, the group planted free bald cypress trees
from the Arbor Day Foundation in large pots for a year
of growing before being placing in the ground.
In
May, 2008, we received a tour by staff at the Ridge Route
Historical Museum in Frazier Park. On the property are
many acorns from oak trees, and a traditional Chumash
home is being built. The Museum and grounds house more
modern items as well.
